Not for the same reasons, but that was me too last night. I hope you're feeling better (or at least on your way to feeling better).

I don't know what I'll do when my phone and tablet need replacing. I'm hoping by the time that happens (hopefully not for a couple of years at least) manufacturers may have seen the error of their ways.

Would you allow an exception for using genuine Tudor beams (as certified by dendrochronology)?

Definitely agree context is important. But if slightly more care is taken over the words (e.g. 'standing in front of the Colosseum' vs 'at the Colosseum') then it indicates more thought has gone into it, so the person relying on the Alt text knows they are not missing out on anything important.

Okay but that tells you nothing about what the people are doing or the expressions they have or the weather or the overall atmosphere, etc.

Obviously something is better than nothing, but if people are capable of doing better at the time of posting their images then they ought, it's just courtesy.

How, in your opinion, would someone Google for more info in the hypothetical example provided?

Who'd have thought that little upside-down ornj jellybean would turn out so majestic?!

So not *terrible* and it is understandable, but also quite sobering that nearly 1/5 of the population living here (whether born here or elsewhere) really struggle with basic, everyday written info in English.

[My only concrete thought in response is 'how can we (general and individual) help?'.]

Inferring from context, it's the latter. Literacy in the language of that country.

The stats are taken from a survey in 2023, the report for which (in England) says:
"Higher literacy skills were associated with higher educational attainment, … being born in the UK and learning English as a child."

This was the second time I've travelled anywhere by myself since using a wheelchair (first time was Taskmaster recording) and it went brilliantly - even better than anticipated b/c lifts the TfLGo app said were out, were actually working.

*Every single* member of staff I encountered were fantastic.

Great questions and interesting discussion from Vivien Godfrey of @stanfordstravel.bsky.social.
(A skill I'd like to learn - there are always things I want to find out, but never know how to ask in a way that invites elaboration.)

[Also I'd never heard of Stanford's before, it sounds awesome!]

→However I CAN understand organising the same type of item across different drawers depending on purpose.

So to me they're still leggings but evidently in your organisation system this type of leggings goes into the trousers drawer (or whatever specific term you use to describe that category).
November 9, 2025 at 4:55 PM
I do see what you're saying, but I don't think my brain works like that. When we (my family) use something for a different purpose than intended, we usually call it '[adjective describing its purpose] [object]'. Or by a specific identifying feature, to distinguish it from others.

November 9, 2025 at 4:55 PM
I still don't understand how that makes them not-leggings, as that just sounds like classifying leggings according to different purposes. But, each to their own. (t's interesting to learn how other people view things even if we don't necessarily understand it.)

Yeah I think the paid had all gone by the time I saw the link over there anyway, just waitlist and a few free tickets (but not even for all of them).
November 7, 2025 at 3:49 PM
I haven't seen anyone here mention getting an e-mail but they're out, someone's shared the link on reddit (idk if it's okay to post it publicly here or not)

To me it's just a logical extension of 'pick your battles' - although maybe it's almost the opposite, thinking about it? 🤔 You're supposed to pick battles you can win, but dying on a hill means having picked a battle because it's important whilst acknowledging you might not win it.
