Just started reading Leif Weatherby’s Language Machines. The opening thesis reads to me like Owen Barfield’s life’s work - language as poetic first, becoming functional only later in so-called ‘advanced’ cultures.

This chart shows the normalized tempo deviation from the mean for Fleetwood Mac’s 'Dreams' (orange) and Taylor Swift’s 'Opalite' (green).

Any guess which one was recorded and edited in Pro Tools?

Writing a piece on the griddification of modern music and how it destroys the embodied production of feelings. I ran a tempo analysis on the first track of the new Taylor Swift record and compared it to The Police’s first hit, Roxanne.

The difference is absolutely striking.

Juliana Snapper talks about the opera she put on 'The Opera Listens To You' in which audience members prompt her and the other performers. A 10 year old girl came up to the microphone:

First, I love opera; second, I lost my sight; and, three, I am afraid of the dark.

"Anyone wishing to protect themselves from uncontrolled re-burdening movements, from neo-heroism, neo-frugality and a politics of new harshness, should soon begin thinking about how to develop democracy-compatible concepts of burdening." Peter Sloterdijk 'In the World Interior of Capital' 2005

Mortgage as Metaphysical Orb

The low-rate mortgage becomes the “orb” that orders life.

Structuring our choices, compressing autonomy & swapping relationality for delta. The house itself is no longer a home in the existential sense but a hollow shell that secures the reproduction of capital flows.

A response I posted to Jigar Shah calling for more of the same technocratic BS that will in fact not get us to the point we all want.

If you want the green energy transition, it will not be found in science; it will be found in the symbolic forms that reveal what is possible.

Snell points out that the concept of 'wonder' was not destroyed by the 'middle ages' it was the Stoics who denied epistemic validity to wonder

This analysis is legible in the current resurgence of Stoicism in our current time. Neoliberalism seen as necessary, wonder is incoherent in such paradigm

After two 115° days in Tucson, I was washing dishes & kept trying to turn the faucet from hot to cold, except it was already on cold.

Pulled out my instant-read thermometer: and the 'cold' tap water is 102.2°.

Flew over Lake Mead yesterday, thinking about how much of the Southwest’s future is bound to this reservoir, while Tucson and Pima County are inviting massive water-intensive data centers to the region.

Economic development as a practice is fundamentally flawed.

Picked up Stiegler’s The Age of Disruption at used bookstore & couldn’t have found a more prescient diagnosis of our moment. DOGE’s liquidation of institutions, algorithmic governance & state-sponsored disposability of human lives is the logical endpoint the administration of savagery.

From a new piece on AI:

The logic that sells art without artists, songs without musicians, connection without embodiment, is the same logic that can destroy actual human bodies & call it necessary. When presence has no value in epistemic relations, its elimination becomes acceptable and inevitable
