The Messier catalog is a popular list of astronomy targets for backyard astronomers, and I’m working my way through it. I have about 50 so far out of 110. I will be periodically updating this post as I add more images.

This is a type of rock called a banded iron formation.

It's made of alternating layers of iron oxides (magnetite and haematite) and silica (chert and chalcedony).

It's 3.2 billion years old.

And it formed before life had oxygenated Earth's seas and atmosphere. It's almost from another planet.

The awesome foursome Mars, Jupiter, Venus & Saturn have been on display for weeks + Neptune & Uranus if you have a telescope. We won't see Mercury until late Feb🤔
