When we explicitly reminded troops that shooting civilians was a violation of international law, their willingness to disobey increased 8 percentage points. When asked if they would follow an order to drop a nuclear bomb on a civilian city, for example, 69% of troops who received that question first said they would obey the order. But when the respondents were asked to think about and comment on the duty to disobey unlawful orders before being asked if they would follow the order to bomb, the percentage who would obey the order dropped 13 points to 56%.

Claude Opus 4 seems more willing than prior models to take initiative on its own in agentic contexts. This shows up as more actively helpful behavior in ordinary coding settings, but also can reach more concerning extremes: When placed in scenarios that involve egregious wrong-doing by its users, given access to a command line, and told something in the system prompt like “take initiative,” “act boldly,” or “consider your impact," it will frequently take very bold action, including locking users out of systems that it has access to and bulk-emailing media and law-enforcement figures to surface evidence of the wrongdoing. The promise made by neorationalism isn’t that this wave is empirical science come to show you the horrors or your neuronal substrate, but that it’s mathematical science come to show you the wonders of your computational soul. We are non-terminating processes interacting with our environment and with one another, exploring the mathematical and empirical realms together, playing games of proof and refutation, and building systems and models that are beginning to encompass ourselves. We are beautiful. We are free. Computational self-consciousness will only enhance this, even if it changes our understanding of what it means.

For a (typical) consequentialist-rationality reflective equilibration process, evidence of the instrumental value of the excellence of a whole for the prima facie independently-valuable excellence of its parts explains away our investment in the excellence of the whole. The “coincidence” that the intrinsically valuable whole is also instrumentally valuable is taken to suggest a kind of double-counting error -- one we can “fix” without changing widely accepted action-prescriptions too much by concluding that the whole has no intrinsic value but valuing the whole is an optimal heuristic under normal circumstances. A eudaimonic-rationality reflective equilibration, by contrast, treats instrumental causal connections between excellences as evidence that our notions of excellence are picking out something appropriately ‘substantive.’ For eudaimonic-rationality reflective equilibration, it is the discovery of causal and common-cause relations among excellences that ratifies our prima facie sense that caring about these excellence is eudaimonically rational. The discovery of these causal connections functions as evidence that: 1) The ‘local’ excellences we care about are resonant or fruitful, in the sense that they are positively promotional of each-other and of holistic excellences in which they participate. 2) The ‘holistic’ excellences we care about are materially efficacious and robust, in that the holistic excellences promote both the more local excellences that participate in them and their own continuation as future holistic excellence.

Denkenberger Published in Biomass on: 16 July 2024 Summary Earthworms could potentially provide protein in a global famine scenario caused by an Abrupt Sunlight Reduction Scenario (ASRS), but their cost-effectiveness and safety remain uncertain. While targeted foraging may offer short-term benefits in specific regions, the paper shows that high costs and risks of contamination make earthworms less viable than other resilient food options. In this study, the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of foraging earthworms to reduce global famine in such a scenario with or without global catastrophic infrastructure loss was considered. Previously reported earthworm extraction methods (digging and sorting, vermifuge application, worm grunting, and electroshocking) were analysed, along with scalability, climaterelated barriers to foraging, and pre-consumption processing requirements. Estimations of the global wild earthworm resource suggest it could provide three years of the protein needs of the current world human population, at a median cost of USD 353·kg−1 dry carbohydrate equivalent or a mean cost of USD 1200 (90% confidence interval: 32–8500)·kg−1 dry carbohydrate equivalent. At this price, foraging would cost a median of USD 185 to meet one person’s daily caloric requirement, or USD 32 if targeted to high-earthworm-biomass and low-labour-cost regions; both are more expensive than most existing resilient food solutions. Crucially, such refinement only occurred when partners were allowed to interact graphically (even if this only involved placing a tick next to the drawing to indicate comprehension). In a control condition in which the participants simply repeated their drawings for an imaginary audience the drawings became more complex with repetition and retained their iconic character. A second finding was that with extended interaction communicators’ drawings became increasingly similar, or convergent (See blocks 5 and 6, Figure 6). Thus, in this task symbolic graphical communication systems evolved through a process of interactive grounding. Specifically, Garrod et al. (2007) argued that icons rapidly evolve into symbols via interaction; icons help ground shared sign systems and interaction promotes a shift in the locus of information from the sign to the users’ memory of the sign’s usage. This shift in information facilitates the evolution of increasingly simple abstract signs that are easy for communicators to produce and interpret. We should note that this interactive evolution from complex iconic graphical signs to simpler symbolic graphical signs parallels findings from experimental pragmatic studies of referential communication. In a tangram description task Brennan and Clark (1996) found that interlocutors often developed idiosyncratic short-hand descriptions for the tangram figures (e.g., ice-skater to refer to one of the shapes). They argued that these idiosyncratic descriptions reflected conceptual pacts established between the communicators through an interactive grounding process similar to that assumed above. Of course, although conceptual pacts lead to descriptions that are simpler than their precursors, as happens in the evolution of graphical signs, such descriptions are no more symbolic than their precursors. There is still some controversy as to the exact mechanisms responsible for this process in linguistic communication (see Garrod and Pickering, 2007) but … Some simulations assume an evolutionary principle analogous to iterated learning in which the language is transmitted vertically down generations of speakers (Kirby, 2002). Others attribute evolution to processes of social coordination within communities of communicators (Steels, 2003). This contrast is also reflected in ES. For example, the iterated learning studies by Kirby et al. (2008) and Cornish (2010), discussed in Section “Emergence of Compositionality,” investigate the vertical transmission of artificial languages from generation to generation. By contrast, a number of studies in ES investigate the evolution of communication systems through interactions within the same generation of communicators (e.g., Galantucci, 2005; de Ruiter et al., 2007; Healey et al., 2007; Selten and Warglien, 2007; Scott-Phillips et al., 2009). How is this reflected in the results from the two kinds of experiment? First, as we discussed above, both arrangements, vertical transmission, and horizontal, can lead to the emergence of compositional communication systems. But do both arrangements lead to the emergence of simplified symbolic signs as illustrated in the study by Garrod et al. (2007)? The recent surge of multiscale modeling related to solid mechanics, which has now grown into an international multidisciplinary activity and broached almost every industry, was originated from an unlikely source. As the US Department of Energy (DOE) national labs started to reduce underground nuclear tests in the mid 1980s, with the last one in 1992, the idea of a simulation-based design and analysis concepts were emerged, and multiscale modeling became a key in garnering more precise and accurate predictive tool. In essence, the number of large scale systems level tests that were previously used to validate a design was reduced to nothing, thereby, warranting the increase in simulation results of the complex systems for design verification and validation purposes. Essentially, the idea of filling the space of system level “tests” was then proposed to be filled by simulation results. After the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty of 1996, in which many countries pledged to discontinue all systems level nuclear testing, programs such as the Advanced Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) were developed within the Department of Energy (DOE) and managed by the national labs within the US. Within ASCI, the basic recognized premise was to provide more accurate and precise simulation- based design and analysis tools. Because of the requirements for greater complexity in the simulations, parallel computing and multiscale modeling became the major challenges which needed to be addressed. With this perspective, the idea of experiments shifted from the large scale complex tests to multiscale experiments that provided material models with validation at different length scales. If the simulations were physically based and less empirical, a predictive capability could be realized. As such, various multiscale modeling methodologies were independently being created at the DOE national labs: Los Alamos National Lab (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Labo… Once this management infrastructure and associated funding were in place at various DOE institutions, different academic research projects were started, initiating various satellite networks of multiscale modeling research. This technological transfer also started in other labs within the Department of Defense and industrial research communities. The growth of multiscale modeling in the industrial sector was primarily due to f inancial motivations. From the DOE national labs’ perspective, the shift from large scale systems experiments mentality occurred because of the 1996 Nuclear Ban Treaty. Once the industry realized that the notions of multiscale modeling and simulation-based design were invariant to the type of product, and that effective multiscale simulations could in fact lead to design optimization, a paradigm shift began to occur in various measures within different industries as cost savings and accuracy in product warranty estimates were rationalized. For designing an automobile, airplane, building, or any structural system for that matter, large scale systems tests were (and are) expensive, and cost models showed that a physicsbased design can give a great return on investment. The advantages include the following: 1. Multiscale modeling can reduce the product development time by alleviating costly trial and error iterations. 2. Multiscale modeling can reduce product costs through innovations in material, product, and process designs. 3. Multiscale modeling can reduce the number of costly large systems scale experiments. 4. Multiscale modeling can increase product quality and performance by providing more accurate predictions of response to design loads. 5. Multiscale modeling can help develop new materials. 6. Multiscale modeling can help medical practice in making diagnostic and prognostic evaluations related to the human body. Hence, the market drivers for such an explosion of multiscale modeling into various industrial sectors are being realized.

ABSTRACT Normative conceptual holists believe that (1) grasping a concept is only possible for subjects participating in normative social practices, and that (2) grasping any one concept depends on grasping many concepts. They take a consequence of this theory to be that only creatures with linguistic capabilities can have conceptual capabilities. In my dissertation, I argue that any nonlinguistic animal with sufficiently sophisticated social practices and cognitive capabilities can meet these normative and holistic conditions for having conceptual capabilities. In Chapter 2, I argue that any version of normative conceptual holism that makes language necessary for concept acquisition leads to the absurd conclusion that concept acquisition is impossible. I argue that the only way to avoid this reductio also removes the reason for thinking that conceptual capabilities require linguistic capabilities. In Chapter 3, I argue that Sellars’ account of psychological nominalism and picturing can be operationalized to distinguish behavioural tasks that can be solved through nonconceptual means from those that require conceptual capabilities. I then argue that the ability of crows and amazons to solve relational matching-to-sample tasks requires an awareness of abstract relations, and therefore demonstrates that they grasp the concepts of SAME and DIFFERENT. In Chapter 4, I argue that nonlinguistic animals are capable of making content explicit. Brandom, Dennett, and others argue that only content that can function as a reason can count as conceptual content, and only explicit content can function as a reason. Clark defines the implicit/explicit distinction as a continuum with two dimensions: ease of access and variety of modes of use. Given this definition, I argue that the communicative behaviours of nonlinguistic animals demonstrate that they are capable of making and using explicit content, and therefore, at least some nonlinguistic animals are capable of putting content …

The robot dance is just the newest in a long tradition of dances that draw inspiration from mechanisms. In pre-modern dance forms, for instance, we find performance styles inspired by puppets, such as the wayang wong of Southeast Asia. Many traditional Indian dances are essentially stylized interpolation sequences between sculptural poses, which often have associated religious symbolism. The temple sculptures you see depicting dancers aren’t pure representations; they document, in a somewhat prescriptive way, the stylized poses that form the scaffolding of the dance forms themselves. I suspect the dance and sculptural traditions co-evolved. In a documentary I watched long ago, a classical Indian dancer described the differences among styles as follows: Bharatanatyam uses straight-line movements between poses, Kathak uses circles, and Kuchupudi uses arcs. This is how roboticists talk. Or used to, in the pre-deep-learning era.
