It's publication day! 🎉🥳 Very soon I won't need to post about this anymore, but in the meantime, if you're interested in the colonial roots of modern tourism, or the role of leisure travel in producing knowledge about the world, check it out. Also as e-book on JSTOR: www.jstor.org/stable/jj.31...
Author copies have arrived! The book is demonstrably real! Official publication date in about two weeks but I've heard it will already be available at ENIUGH next week. Check out the full info over at: lup.nl/publications...
People are always like "could you explain this concept you use in your title" and just come on, leave me alone, please.

Something similar happened to me recently, I had set up old work email A to redirect to newer email B just in case; well, B just expired and I was puzzled to find out I'm still getting A post to current email C; it then turns out people at institution A have just added C to their mailing lists?

Arkisia kuulumisia Palestiinasta:

Tactically not citing relevant work by a guy with the same surname as me since reviewers might think we're related.

Continuing to mark the spooky season, my undergrads and I turn this week to the supernatural preoccupations of early silent cinema. I hope they are as delighted as I am by the gleeful goofiness of Pathé studio's 1906 La Maison ensorcelée. To share the joy, I give you a couple of screenshots:

I don't really understand why so much of my Bluesky feed is about American sports I barely know the name of but let me tell you my hometown club just won the Finnish football championship and I'm going to take the rest of the week off to celebrate. Oh, it's Monday? Whatever.

I'm in the relatively fortunate position of having had almost continuous research funding since my PhD but even so, I've never been able to plan any project with a secure time horizon of more than 2-3 years. It means you limit your ambitions, rush outputs, forgo collaborations. Basically it sucks.
my next steps include finishing my fifth book, preparing the next issue of the journal that I am co-editing, watch a few texts and volumes get finally published, and do my teaching load, but new plans, new projects, new topics will not happen, as temporary employment means working with a hand brake.

Another bit of Halloween reading that I was very happy to pick up for 1€ since I've been on the lookout for a while: Gustav Meyrink's The White Dominican (1921). Lots of esoteric transmigration-of-the-soul stuff cobbled up with vague early-20thC European notions of Buddhism.

Going through someone's copyedits on a text of mine and they've just casually replaced "nineteenth century" with "twentieth century" without comment. Those were pretty different, actually! I'm something of an expert.
