Everyday permit science - NPDES & other water quality, streams, wetlands, marine (long ago) - and dealing w contaminated crap people leave behind. Outside is good, wild places better.
A6 Probably an Aug visit to Paradise at Mt Rainier. The lot was so full, then a lighting storm moved in & the rangers had to get everyone off the trails. Huge downpour that turned to hail & then a washout closed the road as people were trying to leave. #parkchat

A4 I'd go back to Escalante for wow factor but I grew up with the Blue Ridge Parkway - designed as a windshield park. Much more to see if you get off the road and into the forests #parkchat

Got to watch a barred owl in our yard today. We occasionally hear them at night, but I've never seen one during the daytime. Crows were screaming at it, but the owl just took a nap.

Salmon Ruins in Farmington NM is pretty interesting - not a park & no hiking, it's a Chaco - style community dwelling excavated & protected right at the edge of town #parkchat - more to learn as you travel through that area. #parkchat

I would have said dispersed camping in Kiabab National Forest somewhere near the rim of the Grand Canyon, or a view east to Marble Canyon. But fires this summer probably changed that for a while. #parkchat

Hiking most anywhere in Chaco Culture National Historical Park seems to leave the crowds behind. #parkchat

A11 Getting outside, even if it's gloomy & raining & dark at 4 pm helps. We head up to the Skagit River Delta about an hr north of Seattle where at least it's wide open. Bird viewing is better there in the winter also. #parkchat

A8 I know very little about fungi, Im guessing these might be oyster mushrooms. Also a recent find #parkchat

Just the way the forest smells after the rains come back. Even thought the foliage is dying back, everything smells more alive with the return of rains #parkchat

A3 Most of our native trees seem to turn yellow, then brown quickly (or just straight to brown) - always like the reds & oranges #parkchat

A2 Big relief from late summer here (& most of the west), it was so dry & fires & smoke all over. A great time to visit streams in the PNW and see which ones have salmon running #parkchst

A1 Just local parks right now, but it's a great time of yr with the heat & crowds gone, the PNW rains & wind not quite kicking in #parkchat

A5 This was about four yrs ago up on the Skagit River delta & I've forgotten what the birds are, its just a very good area for bird watching. That would be the Olympic Mts in the distance #parkchat

A4 Once again with Crescent Lake - there are canoe rentals at the lodge, we'd paddle w the girls across to this spot (getting 2 posts out of this photo) and fly fish in the clear deep water on a long the shore. A lot of good memories from camping trips there #parkchat

A3 Again, Crescent Lake Olympic NP. The lake formed from a landslide. #parkchat

A2 Salamanders crossing the trail when they climb out of Crescent Lake, Olympic National Park. Usually late August. Not sure what they are up to #parkchat

Some low elevation forest scenes:
bunchberries, I'm going to guess oyster mushrooms, & never did figure out these white-ish blue berries. All kinds of moss on everything
