Not sure what I am yet, I mean it’s early days. Mainly SF&F, TTRPG etc 80s geekery on this. Grogsquad adjacent. Part time historian (MA ✅, PhD tbc). Dabbling writer. Scot by origin, Irish/Euro by choice & fortune. Possibly a cat-operated meat puppet.
I think it did eventually make them a few bob

Choose 20 books that have stayed with you or influenced you. One book per day for 20 days, in no particular order. No explanations, no reviews, just covers.

This week I was conferred with a Master of Arts in History at University College Dublin. It capped a voyage of discovery, unearthing skills I thought long atrophied, exploring new ways of looking at history. It was amazing. Certainly challenging. And… I don’t think I’m done.

Also, robes are great!

On this final day, it has to be the Professor. An eccentric Old English don who changed the world. Certainly changed mine.

His works were my teenage nerd deep-dive obsession. Parsing footnotes in Unfinished Tales was peak geek fun.

So I’m raising a wee glass to JRR Tolkien 🥃

Ursula K LeGuin

Is there anyone else who created such iconic works of both fantasy and SF? And did it as a woman in what was, back then, a very masculine world?

Mould breaker, myth maker, writer of great skill and boundless imagination.

My favourite? The Earthsea Tales.

The Aubrey & Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian

Across 20 erudite, witty, evocative and compelling volumes we follow the story of one of the great depictions of male friendship, each character in all their flawed glory. Arguably the best sustained work of historical fiction.

Having More Books Than You Can Possibly Read

I know I have no hope of reading all the books I buy. This used to make me feel bad. Then I decided I was building a library, not a “to be read” pile. Suddenly I felt better, funnily enough.

Piles of books are great.

He’s a fascinating chap alright. Fairly unique for a modern politician, though the Irish presidency is very much ceremonial.

Love this pic, think it sums him up.

By the time David Low drew this cartoon for the Evening Standard in November 1944, it’s clear no one was operating under any illusions. The overturned pram is particularly brutal!
