Happy Halloween from MSU Entomology! 🎃

Meet the “Halloween beetle” (Harmonia axyridis), an invasive ladybug look-alike with an M-shaped marking on its pronotum. Introduced to control aphids in the early 1900s, it’s now common across North America.

MSU entomologists Anthony Cognato and Sarah Smith traveled to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to collect over 12,000 bark beetle specimens, expanding MSU's A.J. Cook Collection to include more than 2,200 species of these beetles!

Max Helmberger is an Academic Specialist in the Department of Entomology. His work mainly focuses on researching soil invertebrates, but he also has engaged in science communication projects by creating Claymation videos and board games about a variety of ecological topics!

Dr. Rufus Isaacs' lab at MSU has recently contributed nearly 8,000 bee specimens to the A.J. Cook Arthropod Research Collection, providing valuable data for future research on bee decline, biodiversity, and climate change!

MSU Entomology faculty member Dr. Deborah McCullough was the first to identify the #EmeraldAshBorer in 2002. Her lab works on managing EAB & other invasive pests to protect North America's forests.
