My son is studying The Guilded Age right now and this complaint is not new. Since the very beginning, settled immigrants have been looking down their noses at new immigrants, trying to force assimilation while ignoring that their own immigrant ancestors brought THEIR cultures and wounds with them.
honestly he might have a point: his family escaped pogroms and now he's trying to recreate them here
