I am with you. I carry it like it's a baby. Cradled against my hip with my arm underneath.

Don't pet them like a dog. They have nerves close to their skin and if you pet too hard or too long it makes them anxious and bothers them and that's when they'll swat. Focus on the cheeks and chin and head areas at 1st to see what they like

Just love them and let them come to you. Hang out without even approaching them in their safe room. Play with a feather thing even if they seem disinterested at first. Once they're used to you being in there with them let them come to you for pets

Feed high quality food. Do NOT feed cats all dry food diets it can lead to kidney disease or failure.

If you have stairs like mine where they could fall from one floor to another block off. They can get hurt if they fall far.

If there are hanging cords hide them. Anything that isn't pushed flush against the wall they absolutely will get behind. Try to block off under bed areas. Check the box springs under your beds they like to rip holes in them and climb inside and hammock in there.

Meanwhile these 4 keep each other happy and entertained and cuddled.

They are independent in that they don't need US. But they are social and social kittens are happier less aggressive adult cats. They are easily bored and get lonely easily. My poor Harley has been mean and hidey and won't be social since her sister died at 6 months & now won't get near other cats

Give them one safe room to start with where you come in and visit them. Litter box far away from the food in that room. No one wants to eat in their bathroom.

Also kitten proof your house BEFORE bringing them home because once they're burrowed in a hiding spot you didn't block off good luck getting them out.

I have 5 cats inside & a whole colony living in my backyard. I can tell you almost everything you need to know. 1. get them fixed as soon as you're able. 2. Never get just 1 kitten. If they're in a bonded pair get both & your furniture your house your family & kitty will be much happier.
