Methinks the fact that the string is not taut is part of the joke, given that the participants are (or were, in one instance) on a humorous news quiz program .

The name of the road (the “Speedway” part) sure doesn’t help. It sounds as if drivers take the name to heart.

The silliest “do it my way” section of the text is removal of the spring from a bicycle tube schrader valve-to what end I am unsure and unpersuaded. :-}

My late grandfather used to see drivers do that and conclude “Hmm. He used to drive a team of horses.”
