A Philly school principal told The Inquirer they’re experiencing what they call “the season when we get charter kids.”

We dig into a practice that several administrators claim drives troubled students from charters to district institutions.

Harrisburg fallout: #PHLed had to borrow $1.5 billion just to make sure its bills - and teachers - are paid through December. That's $30m lost to borrowing costs that can't be recouped. It's a "disgrace," one board member said. Story: www.inquirer.com/education/hi...
Philly schools just had to borrow $1.5 billion to pay their bills. Here’s why.
The district will pay $30 million for the short-term borrowing, money that “will never be reimbursed, and will never reach the classroom,” board member Whitney Jones said.

The Philadelphia School District and its largest union have a tentative, three-year deal.

The dramatic news came late Sunday night — less than 12 hours before the first day of school for 117,000 district students, but a week before the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers’ contract expired.
Philly teachers have a tentative contract
Terms of the deal were not immediately available, but PFT leaders were pushing for raises, an end to a controversial attendance policy, and the addition of parental leave — which teachers had lacked.

I'm baffled at how Philly government considered members of DC 33 - particularly sanitation workers, 911 operators & Water Dept. workers - "essential" during the pandemic but not essential when they ask for a living wage in the city where they work which also has the highest wage tax in the nation.

Even with state increases, the School District of Philadelphia has a massive deficit, just to keep the current level of services in the schools.

City Council should be explaining how they will *increase* funding for the District, not decrease it. www.inquirer.com/politics/phi...
