Evangelical churches give you a nerd with a guitar and utterly cringe lyrics

Holy Mother Church gives you this:
He said "Amen" straight into the drop

Lmao Pope Leo threw a rave for an archbishop's 75th birthday this is kind of incredible

Personally, I don't think the responsibility to say no lies with the troops. It lies with their commanding officers up the chain, who understand exactly how unlawful and egregious their actions are. They're obligated to take that burden, not the poor schmucks on the ground.

🚨 MAJOR BREAKING

Democrat Catelin Drey FLIPS Iowa SD-1 — a district Trump won by 11.5 points in 2024 — defeating Republican Christopher Prosch in a landslide special election and breaking the GOP supermajority.

Her Republican opponent, meanwhile, ran as a hardline MAGA candidate—backing Trump’s immigration crackdowns, opposing abortion, denying climate change, spreading anti-vax conspiracies, railing against “woke,” and parroting Trump’s 2020 election lies. You get the point.

If I understood Gov. Newsom correctly, he's empowering and encouraging his constituents -- and by extension, the rest of us -- to not follow the same old rules. What does that mean? Vote in the midterms? We're already going to do that.

Anybody remember last summer? The Writers Guild and SAG/AFTRA faced off against the studios. IATSE and the Teamsters jumped in for support and basically they shut down film production. If I were in management at Paramount, I'd be really, really worried right now.

Good morning! I'm in Uganda to visit family and friends.

But depending on your perspective, don't worry or I'm sorry: I'll be back by the end of the month.

See you soon, NYC.

It wouldn't surprise me if some individual or consortium offers to set Stephen Colbert up with his own streaming channel. (Are you listening, George Clooney? Robert Di Niro?)

I will be paying $390 for my upcoming hip replacement surgery. Thank you, health insurance. If I had to pay for the whole thing myself it would be $66,453. I'm sure Medicare and UHC are not paying that amount; I'm sure they'll pay way less.

And in other news...I matched my best time for the NYT Thursday crossword. 9:37. For a brain that seems to be stuck in neutral more often these day, that's not bad. I'm pleased. But not smug. More like relieved.

I've got a month to kill until my hip replacement surgery. I asked my P.A. for a prescription for pain meds because yes it hurts a whole lot. She gave me Voltaren. Sounds like an anime robot movie, doesn't it? But woo hoo! For the first time in over a year, I'm practically pain free!

A historian who doesn't do any actual research is like a neurosurgeon who doesn't operate on brains. It's so fundamental to what we do that you can hardly claim the title "historian" without it.
Lots of commentary on this piece already, all of which I agree with.

For historians, research is a fundamental part of writing.

To farm it out to AI changes the nature of this intellectual process in fundamental ways.

And as Stacy Schiff points out, it also takes all the fun out of it.
