I’m just a potato that won’t quit
It cannot be denied that this is one of the best comic book covers ever penned, right???

Shocking score tonight at the used book store: A brace of Love & Rockets accidentally dumped in the $1 magazine section including the much-vaunted issue 24…

I hope this is a hit for the sake of all the comic book stores out there but jeez I don’t have any skin in the game on this.

Some other cool finds. The best superhero comic run ever for $1. Classic paperbacks. $1 Blu-rays. A FERRIS BUELLER NOVEL.

Not comics, but a bunch of Beverly Cleary Ramona books.

I love how Beezus and Ramona are very much products of 1950’s American culture but everything after Ramona the Pest is a sharp criticism of the 1970’s recession.

Wretched reprints in this book, small reprinting size… but a nice tip-in color section of comics that may never get any sort of archival preservation anytime soon.

That Spooky comic looks super fantastic!

A tabloid compendium made at the early 1970’s featuring many notable characters that appeared in these newspapers.

I confess: I am a New York Daily News guy. The BEST comics page in New York City during the 1990’s.

I picked up this Frank King/Gasoline Alley picture book for $1. It’s in beater shape but I love the hazy orange tones he gave all the illustrations in this book.

I work in a dying steel town. All the institutions that used to make the community work have either been co-opted by big corporations and bled dry or left by the wayside in favor of modernity… so yeah, I enjoyed the first episode of The Paper.

FINALLY, I got a tip that Ross Dress for Less was liquidating these Young Frankenstein vinyl toys at $7 apiece.

These’ll look great in our Halloween toy display this October!

Found an issue of Ganges I didn’t have for $3 bucks. A true bargain considering the level of craft in the comics AND high production values.

I may rarely know what’s going in in a Glen Ganges comic strip but I always like reading them and looking at them.

One thing I admired about the first collection and continue to here is the the level of modernity Fredericks was allowed to gently touch on with social/political issues with his comics.

I very much doubt you could mention things like Civil Rights or Women’s Liberation in a comic aimed at teens.

I picked up Fred Fredricks’ Rebel Rides Again! for $2. This was a comic strip that appeared in Scholastic Scope, a free magazine that was given to junior and senior high school students in the 1970’s.

Scope was still a thing when I was teaching middle school, but no comics, sadly.

I went with 3.

The Brain That Wouldn’t Die is the first Mike in the theater ep and I remember it being pretty funny.

Cave Dwellers is a classic.

I Accuse My Parents MIGHT be my fav Joel episode? It’s no sci-fi monster flick but it’s such a dumb morality tale and the show sweetly eviscerates it.

Half-Price Books had a brace of the Rhino MST3K VHS cassettes all marked at like $4 (although The Amazing Colossal Man was $10 or some reason? Maybe it’s out of print or didn’t make a DVD release?)

This might end up being bad BUT the collective cultural vibe I’m getting from the spots on the Internet I still deign to visit? STUPID.

GREG DANIELS. Do we not respect people’s batting averages anymore? He’s a home run king when it comes to sitcoms.

Give it a shot before you dog on it, right?

These two guys are the biggest assholes in Indian Summer.
August 24, 2025 at 3:39 AM
Indian Summer (1993) is a better “assholes in the 1990’s reunite” movie than Beautiful Girls (1996)… but I believe we do not get to choose our vices and Beautiful Girls is one of mine.

Hey Ron Howard! If you want a quiet way to make amends for normalizing ol’ JD, give me a shout. We’ve got a hundred year old opera house in Middletown that could absolutely use some of your big shot Hollywood money!
