"One night, my granddad had a nightmare, he did. So scared that he chewed his pillow to bits. Bits! Next morning, I says, 'How you feel granddad?' He says, 'Oh, not bad. A little down in the mouth.' *laughs* I always say there's nothing like a good joke!"
"No. And that was nothing like a good joke."

Was looking through my desk for an extra file folder and found the pile of research, blog posts, and assorted drafts I'd written on Cesar Tarrant before the #McMullen2025 paper. Better be careful, or I'll find yet another thread to follow up on...

Another naval history snippet courtesy of John Paul Jones and the Plenary Session of #McMullen2025. OTD in 1779, Officials at the Texel sketched the American flag flying from the frigate Alliance. On the 3rd, they had sketched the flag flying from HMS Serapis, captured by Jones on 23 September.

A shipmate of Horatio Nelson's and later a Continental Navy captain shared this about a chaplain during his tenure in the Royal Navy.

Inspired by the Plenary at #McMullen2025, I'm posting some naval history online.

Probably the funniest one...like he took the time to say all this as BR burned and sank around him. Fanning also said JPJ kicked him in the butt for dropping a chronometer FWIW...

Inspired by the Plenary at #McMullen2025, I'm posting some naval history online.

From Jones's official report, probably the closest we'll get to the truth...though admittedly Jones often tried to look more genteel for his bosses...

Inspired by the Plenary at #McMullen2025, I'm posting some naval history online.

This comes from an unidentified source from a British newspaper which also claims Jones shot three of his own men in the face when they tried to surrender...

Inspired by the Plenary at #McMullen2025, I'm posting some naval history online. On the anniversary of Flamborough Head, I'm sharing possible quotes from John Paul Jones. 40 years later, Richard Dale said JPJ declared "I have not yet begun to fight" but Pearson of Serapis said he heard no response.

My latest book grab from an online auction. Includes about a half dozen articles by Commodore James Barron, the subject of a bio I have in the VERY early stages.

Gotten two pages typed into the paper so far, with occasional visits from this one. He's eaten two or three note cards...not sure if it was criticism of my writing or just challenging the sources...

Taking a break from the research this weekend...to turn it into a beginning of the writing. Lot of great material going into this paper, and looking forward to presenting again at #McMullen2025!

Found some old notes and index cards from my early research on Cesar Tarrant for the new paper, and checking out some potential new sources too. Browsing Schaffer's new book on Colonial Navies has me thinking a review would look awesome in Proceedings...
