I was trying out some prompts for my upcoming article about AI image generation. I got these while trying to test if DALL-E can do an img2img prompt. These make me really happy for a reason I can’t find words for.

Hope this brings a bit of magic to your day.

If you're stuck, walk away.

Don't sleep for 24 hours, and then give yourself 30 minutes to solve it.

You will likely succeed, with 10 minutes to spare.

You're too exhausted to think in multiple threads. Which means you're too tired to have self doubt.

But it works.

Within the Earth's flatness, points and polygons dance. Sometimes a point inside a polygon. Sometimes outside.

A point is a playground. A restaurant.

A polygon is a zip code. A city.

They dance, they gossip.

"Sam's house is in a food desert"

The spatial join is the music.

I feel such an innate sense of joy when I make a map. It's a way of taking something as big as the entirety of the world - thousands of square miles of space, and shrinking it into a top-down birds-eye view. It's a combination of something powerful and yet simple at the same time

Running a bit late for #30DayMapChallenge Day 11: A Map of the Arctic!

This is a map of settlements in the arctic circle as of 2017. It was really difficult to use a standard projection here, so I used the "World Azimuthal Equidistant" projection to actually visualize the area.

Happy Saturday! Today for #30DayMapChallenge, we will make an AI map.

I used stable diffusion 3, and prompted for a map of San Diego with exaggerated mountains, and 3d side view. While the map is beautiful, it doesn't look like San Diego. But hey, I'd live here.

Happy Friday! For #30DayMapChallenge Day 8: A map from HDX, I wasn't really sure. So I decided to map world flood events from 1985-2010, as a reminder that no matter where you live, you can't escape the changing climate.

🌍 #30DayMapChallenge Day 7: Vintage Map

Starting with a historic Lewis and Clark map, I created a custom style, then added 3D terrain and atmospheric effects. The result? A vintage-inspired San Diego / Baja view with a modern twist.

What do you think—is it vintage enough?

#30DayMapChallenge Day 6: Raster.

Manual Shaded relief of the contiguous United States from NaturalEarth.

Whether today is a day for you to be happy or a day for you to be sad, let this serve as a reminder that when you zoom out, we're all in this together.

#30DayMapChallenge Day 5: A Journey!

I had a long bike ride with friends this Sunday, so I pulled down the Strava GPX file, and animated it in KeplerGL. It looks like a snake moving through #sandiego!

I can't post a GIF on bluesky, so I included the full path, colored by elevation

#30DayMapChallenge Day4: Hexagons!

Courtesy of data.gov, a hexbin of fire ignition points in the Continental US from 2020-2024. Lots of ignition points in near Phoenix for some reason.

Made with deckgl!

#30DayMapChallenge Day 3: Polygons!

With voting day coming up, seems like it's a good idea to remind people where council districts are in San Diego.

Fun fact: South Bay communities look so separate from the rest of the City because they got annexed in 1957.
