I Mike Lee was correct about the city centre, that all it needs is to prioritise cars over people to thrive, then Newmarket, nothing but traffic and parking, would be booming. Reader, clearly this diagnosis is wrong:

Very pleased constructive councillors voted to proceed with PC120 today. As the originator of the two titles below, I am not callous about the value of our built heritage, but also know that cities are engines of change, need to be adding new layers every age. This will enable that in balanced way

To achieve positive things in public office depends critically on the ability to maintain constructive relationships. I’m proud of my record of working with Auckland’s key decision makers for a more prosperous and liveable and inclusive 21stC city, and that’s how I’ll operate as your councillor:

It is time the most urban place in our whole country is represented by someone who understands what cities are and how great they can be. Someone facing forward into this century and seeing the possibility, not just trying (and largely failing) to hold it back!

Mayoralty schmayoralty: these are the races that will decide the future of Auckland
Will Wayne Brown spend the next three years being pressured to build cycleways or getting yelled at about villas and bus lanes? It could come down to a few votes.<br />

A reminder that Councillor Mike Lee fought hard to stop all improvements downtown as he does to this day everywhere. Fortunately he is also ineffective and was unable to stop these upgrades. He is stuck in last century and stuck in the role. Help him move on: Vote for a positive future

Dishonest exaggeration by veteran councillors Lee & Fletcher on planning issues is so transparent - A shameful attempt to frighten people into voting for these low effort councillors at the cost of a better, more prosperous, + vibrant future for the city. One with homes & jobs for all generations.

“My core frustration with veteran incumbents like Lee and Fletcher is they have been at the absolute centre for Auckland for 30 years. Every election they pop out to say it’s broken ... if it is, they’re the ones who have done it.”

Or at least have proven themselves to be unable fix it.

In this working paper that was published today, Matthew Maltman and I review some of the economic evidence on the effects of ✨upzoning✨in Auckland in 2016.

tldr: We find remarkably robust evidence that upzoning led to more housing and lower rents in Auckland. Wow!

Two special moments this morning. 1) Casting my vote first thing at my local mall. It’s kind of cool seeing my own name on the ballot paper. 2) Playing Spacies on the *free* machine at LynnMall.

NB: 1) We got permission to take photos at the polling booth. 2) No kids were waiting for a turn.
