Very true. Thing is, there are moves an authoritarian makes to consolidate power and then there are moves that do little more than weaken the country as a whole. Trump gains nothing from shutting down USAID and the Peace Corps, but Putin and Xi gain a lot.

Foreign nations have a better sense of what constitutes U.S. power than most Americans do. You cannot convince me that these actions by the Trump administration are not being coached by our adversaries.
