I’d say a big part of it is that Senate Dems are so old, but a decent chunk of the worst ones haven’t even been in the Senate for that long.

In this thought, Trump is only successful because the centrist establishment has blocked the left from power. That’s not to say that the centrist establishment doesn’t deserve a lot of scorn, but Trump isn’t only on them or purely a result of them clinging to power.

At least for the particular pundit that started this conversation it comes from a belief that the right in the US is on the wane/structurally weak and just waiting to be smited by a resurgent left populism.

Honestly I’d consider us lucky if we got out of this with only a Kent State, but I’m just finishing up Battle for Spain and am in a dark mood.

Congress ran relatively normally in the 2000s. 2011 is when the current dysfunction really gets going thanks to a combination of the Freedom Caucus in the House, the abuse of the filibuster in the Senate, and the inability of Democrats to do procedural reforms from 2019-2023.
