Of course, one of the APs is now only negotiating 100 Mbps, not 1 Gbps. Think the 8P8C connector is dodgy. Sigh.

Yes, three bolts is wildly overkill. But fasteners are cheap, and I don't want to have to do this a third time.

Entirely predictably, the hot glue failed almost immediately (one within days, the other within weeks; good bonding to the plastic blanking plates, very poor to the metal mounting plates). After five months of guiltily averting my eyes from the APs dangling from […]

That's it all back together again at least, ready for me to biff it off the nightstand again.

In all honesty, I don't think it'll go back into service – at least not right away. It's just too annoying. Like, no wonder I keep knocking it over; the snooze button […]

Anyway. “Fixing” the thing we came here to fix is “just” a matter of holding the top two buttons in place while folding the back piece closed, while the stars align and Lucifer gives Michael a back rub. If it still looks depressed, it is (and so am I): the […]

Other components on the board include the world's most obnoxious beeper, even by alarm clock standards.

While we're in here anyway, we can see that the micro driving the show is a PIC18F46K22: 64 KB flash, 3.8 KB RAM. Dunno how fast they're clocking it; could be up to 64 MHz.

This is the back of the “mode” switch that pushed in. It's simply part of the injection-moulded back housing, articulating on two plastic spars that they're betting won't eventually wear and crack, I guess. It rebounds off this tactile switch on the PCB. With […]

The two plastic button inserts fall out when you open it – that's a classic case of poor design for manufacture. The other thing that fell out for me was this magnet. It's one of a pair mounted to the bottom of the main case, akin to another pair recessed into […]

I think the failure happens because the enclosure is screwed together at the top, and (poorly) clipped together at the bottom. I keep knocking it over while flailing for the snooze button on the top, and so the case eventually pops apart, so the “mode” button […]

Tbh this whole exercise feels like the path less travelled. I don't know where the community for these sorts of things is hiding these days. /r/jailbreak seems pretty dead (and also not particularly technical; and I've been off reddit for years now, anyway). Discord guilds, I suppose. But […]

I went with Palera1n over Dopamine because a rootful jailbreak sounded pretty cool. However, its out-of-box repos don't seem particularly useful, and I'm not sure if it's safe to remove them and replace them with alternatives. I think it should be, as long as I also remove all of the packages […]

I was really hoping I could just `apt install ffmpeg` and be off to the races once I'd jailbroken the thing, but FFmpeg is broken as packaged in Palera1n repo. Annoying. I've stumbled across several broken packages there already. They don't really seem to be maintained, but I also get the […]

But I'd very much like to have the whole capture process neatly packaged up into a phone. It's got a camera, it's got network connectivity: no reason it couldn't both capture images and periodically schlep them off to S3. And it's got scads of local storage (relatively speaking) to tide it over […]

I'm currently using a Logitech C920 + a FriendlyELEC ZeroPi running OpenWrt, and the image quality is absolutely atrocious. A webcam is not ideal for stills in the first place, and I think the heat of being in the window for multiple summers has warped the lens: the images it produces are […]

It seems stupid to have this fairly reasonable camera kicking around that I simply cannot use for this task. I am awfully afraid that I'm going to end up with some old Powershot off eBay + CHDK.

@slyka That's clever – thank you for sharing.

@slyka How are you measuring CPU load? Something I've been meaning to figure out how to do...

@slyka This is absurdly cool!

Hey, guess who has two thumbs and forgot to re-enable virtualization support the last time he upgraded his BIOS?

It's faster now...
