The “mode” button on the back of my (wife's) Lumie Zest SAD lamp + alarm clock has gotten stuck pushed in. This is the second time this has happened. Hey, fun fact: if your product isn't very good, harping on about how it's designed and made in Britain just makes you look like a gammon.

I have an old iPhone (iOS 15.8.5, rootfully jailbroken) that I'd like to use as a webcam (in the classic take-a-photo-every-five-minutes sense) in my office window. Can anyone give me any pointers on how to accomplish this? I am currently stuck on triggering the rear camera from the command line […]

First day back at work. When I woke up this morning, I started making a groaning noise like an old MFM hard drive spinning up, and I haven't stopped yet.

Love it when you buy an indie game on Steam and when you go to install it it's only like four hundred megs. Extremely strong indicator of quality.

The biggest problem passkeys face is divergent interpretations of their purpose and function. In another ongoing thread about passkeys, proponents are simultaneously arguing that they make password managers redundant, and that password managers solve the passkey portability problem.

It doesn't […]

Git commits should have an “Uptime” header field that records the age of the current user's login session. No more need to use “4 AM commit” as a heuristic for dodgy changes; now the commit made at 09:00 after an all-nighter is clearly distinguishable from one made while bright-eyed and […]

It is an affront to me, personally, that AliExpress orders no longer take five weeks to arrive. How am I supposed to pretend I'm blocked on this project when the pieces are sitting on my bench mocking me‽

Every time I drive over to the west coast of Scotland, I get a real kick out of this telephone exchange and adjoining telephone box in the middle of nowhere. (It is on the A86, about half a mile outside of Tulloch.)

This seems like a problem best solved with a Dremel, so you just know that in about twenty minutes I'll be bemoaning the irreparable accidental damage to my workpiece.

The “community platform” section on the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey not having any fediverse options is really indicative of the type of developers they think they're surveying, eh?

8800 GTX on Marketplace for £150. My dude, that card is over 18 years old. Closest I've ever come to messaging a seller just to ask wtf.

(Also, how is the 8800 old enough to drink?)

love 2 have 2 read a project's CI workflow to understand how to build it because the documentation covers usage but not compilation or installation.

I use an ad blocker, so of course it makes sense for this retailer (Wayfair) to block me from browsing (and potentially spending money on) their online store.

Like I get it, they're not actually trying to block ad blockers; their concern is really scrapers, and […]

RIP #pocket: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/future-of-pocket. The integration with my Kobo e-reader was wonderful, and I'll miss it sorely. Anyone know of a similarly-integrated replacement? Willing to switch to install Quill, etc. if that helps.

Tacos tacos tacos. Made fish tacos last night, including from-scratch corn tortillas. They're so easy to make (compared to flour tortillas), but it's been half a decade since I did because masa harina is just hard enough to get in Scotland (mail-order only, basically) that I've never bothered […]
