Cricket was on at the Oval in London this week. It was pouring with rain. This is just one of five parking bays for the cricket fans to get to the ground (unfortunately taking most of the pavement rather than taking up storage spaces on the road. Is it time we talked about e-vehicle storage space?)

I’m not sure I have ever seen this sign used in the UK anywhere else. Seen it plenty of times overseas

More shots of the Chertsey - Woking cycle path (shared cycle path and foot way. As you can see, Surrey County Council has not been particularly interested in maintaining the asset

There is a cycle path between Chertsey and Woking in Surrey. This section of it nearly killed me today. I was approaching slowly when a car came out from the right. There’s simply zero room to brake safely in that context

New look urban mobility in London. A cargo bike delivery on one side of the street. A cargo bike heading back into town on the other. And a large goods lorry in the background

The City of London (the financial centre) has seen a massive change in how its streets are used. Since 2019:
• - 24% private motors (exc buses + coaches)
• - 15% freight vehicles
• + 60% cycling
• - 30% walking + wheeling

Birds-eye view of the road works on Lambeth Bridge, London. As you can see, the bridge has one way for motor vehicles , the other lane is being worked on. There are temporary cycle tracks in both directions during the road works

This used to be a two way street for motor vehicles. Now a small scheme is being built to make it a two-way quiet route for people cycling and one way for cars (Clapham, London)

Pavements are for….? Bins! 13 bins permanently stored on the pavement outside this house in London (all of them for the same building which is divided into six small apartments)

Before and after: This used to just be a bit of nondescript street. Now it’s a micro space for people. As I walked past, this kid walked up and immediately started playing. Amazing what happens when you design city spaces for people. Not just for cars.

When I used to work here, this space used to be a private car park. And now, well, it’s rather nicer. Chancery Lane, London

First glimpse of the new cycle track being installed at the junction south side of Lambeth Bridge, London

Not the best photo. But super to see so many kids cycling to school on the safe cycle paths out in inner Bristol this morning.

Pre work wander around Bristol this morning. Very noticeable how bus stops in the centre almost all have raised platforms to enable easier boarding

Travelling all around England this month. Can’t help but notice a huge increase in these in lots of cities. In this case, taking up 2/3 of the footway on a very busy pedestrian route between Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road. Is this a good thing for enabling walking?

Off to Manchester next week. Thinking of going for a swim at the aquatics centre after work in the evening. It's a 15-20 minute walk. The routes google maps is giving me look, erm, inviting.......

Spotted on in a cafe window. You see a lot of these sorts of signs around, campaigning for slower traffic speeds where there are lots of people around.

Lots of these bollard e-chargers popping up in parts of London. Would be nicer off the pavement but kind of practical….

Significant improvement to journey times for motor vehicle drivers on the bridges/tunnels into / out of Manhattan, since congestion pricing was introduced. on.ft.com/3CebJXZ

It’s quite fascinating just how many people are getting to work using shared e-bikes in central London. This is the morning parking situation in one street in Westminster, London

Pavement or digital advertising space? Each advertising company gets its own competing digital advertising space
January 13, 2025 at 6:53 PM
Haymarket, London. As far as I can work out, the only route to cycle from the West End to Parliament Square. 3 one way lanes of extremely fast moving traffic. The cycle route is won the middle of the three lanes. Pretty on foot. Not so pretty by bike. Downright scary

New housing in central London. Right next to two underground stations. Love how pedestrians will have to now have to run across this massively wide (and brand new) entry / exit road into the Nine Elms development

London pavements are increasingly turning into spaces for bright LED advertising boxes. This is 100m stretch of pavement in Stockwell, south London. Three LED advert boxes, one older advert box, one derelict phone box which has never had a functioning phone, just adverts on it
January 9, 2025 at 1:47 PM
View from the London bus. It’s a bit sad that two rows of parked cars on this busy bus route means two buses can’t actually get past each other
