I keep forgetting how rewarding it is to finish a core feature of something and then making a small bit of UI or command that shows the state of it.

You get to have a Nice Visual for your hard work and see it going somehow.

An astoundingly low resolution picture of a green and orange plastic toy oven in which you could insert metal mold filled with some sort of silicon/resin to cast scorpions, spiders and whatnot, sometimes glow in the dark. @0xabad1dea This betrays my age, but living through that era means remember having six of these stacked on top of each other and sometimes moving them to the corner of the screen and pretending all was well so one of the threads of that application could finish whatever it was doing.

The output is piped into jq and shows a json structure of the inventory and all of the interesting fields, such as name, description, ip, flavor, versions, and a dict of all updates and their properties, with an iso timestamp for `last_refresh`.

On the far end of the patch panel 8 cables are joined in a bundle that folds nicely to the side, and disappears inside a wall mounted duct. It is aesthetically pleasing.

A 24 ports patch panel between a stowed away rack console and a firewall. Very short and clean looking patch cables are used between three of the ports on each. It is aesthetically pleasing.

A beige compaq server cabinet filled a few systems, a 4U no-name box on rails, a 1U opnsense firewall. Modems and Intel NUCs are sitting on nice 1U/2U shelves. There is a rackmount console nicely stowed away in 1U above the red firewall. The same rack at an angle, with the rackmount console pulled out and deployed. It looks like a cheap chinese laptop but with rails on the side.

A prompt running "exosphere sudo generate --provider apt --user bigadmin". It outputs a sudoers snippet preloaded with a command set alias for the required commands only, and a NOPASSWD line for running them, scoping the privileges to exactly what is needed, no more, no less.

A sample of the REPL console for Exosphere. A first command is ran, "security providers". It displays a table with the provider name, platform it targets, and the next two columns are the two main functions they perform (Refreshing the Catalog of available updates from the internet on the remote system, and Retrieving the List of Updates within exsosphere). The Apt entry (Debian/Ubuntu Derivatives) shows "Requires Sudo" in red in the "Refresh Catalog" column. Everything else in the table is "No Privileges" in green. "security policy" is then ran, which displays: Global SudoPolicy: skip Then, "security check akaname" is ran, to check the effects of the policy on a host named "akaname". It displays the global policy (skip), informs that the Host Policy differs (it is set to "nopasswd", and that this value is local), describes the package manager as "apt" and shows that the system can synchronize the catalog and get updates. "security check shinigami" is then ran, and displays about the same information, except the host policy is set to skip, and we are informed that this is the global setting. The difference is the "Can Synchronize Catalog" line, which has a red "No" next to it. A warning in yellow is emitted at the bottom, informing that one or more operations require sudo privileges that are not granted by the current policy, and that some functionality may be limited.

I have explained to the Cat that the bunch of weird computers and random garbage that's populating the bedroom is a temporary affair while I clean up the lab, but I don't think he believes me.

He just doesn't understand why computers, and keeps looking at me like "u ok bro?"
