I read Cannery Row and Tortilla Flat a few years ago, back-to-back, after not having read him since high school and Grapes of Wrath? Absolutely loved them both, for all the reasons you said above.

Haven't had to resort to that but will file it away. We're usually home and standing on the porch looking annoyed gets the same effect.
