The cages were hung there after the siege and recapture of the city by Catholic forces led by the Prince-Bishop Franz von Waldeck. After the leaders were tortured and executed, their bodies were placed in these cages as a warning to others who might consider similar religious rebellions. This event was part of a larger historical episode known as the Münster Rebellion, where radical Anabaptists attempted to establish what they believed would be a godly kingdom in preparation for the Second Coming of Christ.
