Technically, it never left. It was just merged in to the prison system. Inmates can still be forced to work for little to no wages.

It starts with Obergefell. Then, they'll go after Loving, which legalized interracial marriage. Then they'll wipe out no-fault divorce. Then, as Whiskey Pete posted the other day, they'll come for women's right to vote one day.
Supreme Court formally asked to overturn landmark same-sex marriage ruling
10 years after the Supreme Court extended marriage rights to all same-sex couples, it will consider whether to take a case asking it to overturn the decision.

Similar stuff happening here in Canada - the Vector Institute fully has the ear of our credulous technophile Prime Minister, and are pushing for industry self-regulation AND to limit (or even eliminate) liability for harms caused by AI systems. It's unbelievable. bsky.app/profile/its....
OK listening to another 'Disruptors' podcast from this RBC dude and at ~ 22:00 there's an AI policy person saying, rather than govt directly regulating AI companies, they should select AI startup companies to be 'licensed regulators' of the industry, podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/r...

tech companies & executives are not scared enough of the consequences of harming people. they know they're ultimately very insulated from the blowback for wildly reckless experiments on people; that makes for a very unhealthy environment that we need to fix now

tech co's should be scared of people

you put self-driving cars on the road and you kill a person, you should be scared. if you put a chatbot into kids' hands and tell them to use it and they use it and then they kill themselves, you should be really fucking scared. the idea that the wagons should circle *around you* is unbelievable.

despite being an extremely mediocre game (from a story and game play perspective) it remains pushed to the top of sales pages to press people into buying it, and people ignored our pleas to not to get the game. it kept the HP series relevant and sent JKR money. so yeah I'd avoid it altogether.

Hogwarts Legacy was a major part of the HP boycott when it came out - I straight up cut ties with ppl I know who played that.
Not just because it's HP and that gives $ to JKR but bc the plot is grossly antisemitic. I wouldn't touch it even if gifted. And streaming is a no go for the whole IP.

I will say the vast majority of interactions with this thread have been fine but alas this has reached the people who start calling me an asshole and a "privileged trans person" because I said my peers should also boycott this series with me and not buy Hogwarts Legacy to give money or clout to JKR.

I'm not gonna like accept apologies or excuses on behalf of the whole trans community and idc what individual trans ppl decide to permit themselves to do here, i think a 100% boycott is necessary and anyone that won't commit to that is not an ally. that's all.

idk what people expect me to say when they tell me directly they might still break this boycott because xyz specific circumstances that somehow give them guilt free points to touch the IP. telling me this to launder the guilt through my interaction isn't going to work sorry. you will still feel bad

I am not here to grant you permission to feel better about how (un)successfully you've boycotted the Harry Potter series. I dont care to incentivise you to boycott, either - if you can't do it out of compassion i won't bribe you with alternative fantasy or feelgood "it's ok you tried" words for you.

I dont want to hear how anyone has struggled to boycott HP up until this point. I don't want to give my time and energy to anyone who is trying to get me to say "aw well that's all right then" to make them feel better about not supporting trans ppl as we've begged for up til now. just shush.

do not come onto a trans person's posts as they're talking about boycotting an anti-trans creator and all related IPs and be like "yeah i mean i would break boycott if it was convenient i guess but I'll try not to" like buddy i dont know you or care about how you struggle to grasp what a boycott is.

you have to be living under a fucking rock to continue pretending that engaging with Harry Potter / JKR at all isn't harmful.

do NOT watch this shit, stop platforming it, don't pirate and review it, don't interact at all.

LET. THE. IP. DIE.

i will cut you the fuck off if you play hogwarts legacy or watch this series or go to see the cursed child or give the books to the children in your life.

get your HP house out of your bio.

even pirating the new HP is unacceptable. stop legitimising JKR's nazi works and platforming her nazi views.
LET THE IP DIE.

no watching, streaming, pirating, reviews, deep dives, fix-it fics, fanart, merch, HP tourism. NONE OF IT.

DONT ENGAGE with the IP of Harry Potter ever again.

^So much this! Advocated for this forever as an educator (for kids & adults). I know there are studies that show friction w/ guidance does wonders

fwiw I think LLMs like other tech can improve learning but it has to be done well & thoughtfully
