Glasgow southside. Golden age hip-hop, fitba and watching old episodes of the Wire.
Both released OTD 45 years ago! What a dilemma. Which single should the cash strapped two-tone pre-teen like me have been asking Santa for?

Happy 59th birthday to Masta Ace. Still one of the freshest MCs out there. IMO Slaughtahouse is probably the most slept on LP in hip-hop.

35 years ago UK hip-hop was having a moment. Mere days after London Posse dropped their seminal LP, the Sindecut released Changing the Scenery. A head spinning mixture of hip-hop, soul and reggae, with an incredible production that shoulda catapulted them to stardom. Instead it's a lost UK classic.

Sound Affects was released on this day 45 years ago. Although Setting Sons is my personal fave, there's an argument that Sound Affects is the Jam's most accomplished LP. Brilliantly mixing emerging post-punk influences with 60s psychedelic pop, this was a band at the very height of its powers.

36 years ago tonite my flatmate from Washington DC dragged me along Glasgow's Mayfair to see the first Scottish gig of some band called Fugazi. My intro to straight-edge hardcore was unforgettable with an electric atmosphere and a blistering set from one of the greatest live bands ever.

Down in that their London for the day. Just went and saw Jennie Baptiste's small but perfectly formed photo exhibition on the UK hip-hop scheme at Somerset House. It's not only brilliant but free (well pay what you can).

Usually our local record fare has pretty slim pickings for an ageing b-boy. However struck gold this weekend

"They're always turnin up with these new words cockneys ain't they"

Released OTD 35 years ago Gangster Chronicle is a seminal LP, capturing when UK rap had found its own defiantly British voice, backed by a swaggering sound that owed as much to South London reggae sound systems as US breakbeats.

Agreed Leeroy. Unfortunately I don't think I still have the chutzpah to carry it off.

If Carlsberg did hip-hop gigs! Check out the insane line up from PE's London Arena gig 35 years ago today. Not just the cream of US talent - incl EPMD, Masta Ace & Tragedy - but an elite roster of legendary UK acts. London Posse, Mell'o, Demon Boyz and She Rockers! 🤯

All Mod Cons was released OTD in 1978. An LP that was talked about in hushed tones by the older kids in my street. It saw the Jam make a quantum leap in both musicality and song writing ambition. Paul Weller was 20.

Babylon was released OTD 45 years ago. A long neglected classic of UK film, it's moving, uncompromising, angry and defiant. Celebrating a community and culture that refused to be broken by endemic racism and police brutality, it's also powered by a fantastic reggae soundtrack.

Happy birthday to the truely inspirational Pauline Black. Singer, actress and goddamn rudegirl style icon.

In 1990 black British music was moving at a dizzying speed as various crews mixed hip-hop, reggae, soul and rave in a blitz of creativity. For instance both of these brilliant double A sides dropped on the same day 35 years ago!
