My year 8 group worked on area of a rectangle, then finding the area of compound shapes. Pretty impressed by how much work they got done today!

Teaching my Year 9 standard form slightly differently this time due to @jwrightmaths.bsky.social MathsConf session. Halfway through teaching positive Indies SF.
Seeing how it goes, standard form is not my favourite topic.

Year 11 moved onto Trigonometry again, so to start we need to recap last year's work so used this very nice mixed exercise from Dr Austin.

spent last week thrashing out expanding brackets with a grid/area model last week with grade 1-3 yr 10s, felt like I was going nowhere fast and encountering lots of difficulties.
This morning did reverse process to factorise with same model. Insane success rate.

Started Surds off with the year 10 with a challenge to write each number as a product of a square number and an integer. Led on nicely to introduce how to simplify Surds.

Had my interactive whiteboard stop working for half the lesson. The second half wasn't interactive but at least they could see questions. Thank god for textbooks
Half a lesson of indices practice textbook then half on fractional powers on the board.

I was really happy with my year 11 lesson today. We did tangents to a curve, before they got the question we scaffolded each part (finding gradients, perpendicular gradients, substitution to find the line) then when they actually saw it for the first time they could easily do it!

One of my year 11s had a problem with his DT coursework which he wanted help with and it was such a great problem I had to solve it...
It took a while but also deep joy in doing it.

What is people's favourite way to get students remembering their trig values needed for non calculator.
When I was at school it was just memorise them (didn't work) now I sketch triangles to find them but I've also seen the hand method?

Year 11s plotted equations of circles today (amongst other things) wanted to give them the pre drawn axis to save time but once again the printers decided not to work.

School Internet wasn't working very well so not as much done as would have been liked (at least next week is off for us)
Some of my year 10s got to challenge themselves with these lovely Corbett questions.

Starting Surds after the holidays (only taught it once)
Anyone got a nice way to start it as my group last year still had some issues after being taught and I know there's a better way.

Had the realisation mid year 11 lesson that they could not draw linear graphs (which they needed to know for the upcoming task) so tried to print out axis to practice (printer wouldn't work) so went to drawing them by hand!

(Cards are not in order as forgot to take a photo before collecting them)

My ELC found fractions of amounts today using diagrams to help them. Since we use ActivInspire I could just drag and drop the diagram they needed.
Also marked 27 higher maths papers in 2 hours 20 minutes! (Including inputting scores)

I've had in the past students finding it difficult to decide if an expression would factorise into a single or double bracket. So I created a mix of 20 questions to try and build that skill of deciding which one to use. Unsurprisingly a lot of them struggled. Better now than an exam!

Just over 18 years later my apple tree has finally produced an apple! Been waiting 3 weeks to try this as the tree lives in my grandma's garden now. (It has lived in 3 different gardens)

Just finished making my Mathsconf39 presentation. I was worried I wouldn't have enough to say, the opposite might actually be true (at least people can see the slides I miss when they get emailed out!)
Also can I just say, I've not made a PPT in over 2 years so I am quite impressed with myself.

Both of my year 9 classes did loads of substitution work today. Got the exercise from the foundation sumbooks 2002. They are available online as a pdf. Loads of questions if the students just need loads of practice.
