I'm an 80s kid, an Osage, a left-winger, a dog lover, a senior programmer, recently an educational assistant, an amateur baker, reader of fantasy and sci-fi, movie addict (mostly older releases), and sundry other things. I live in Eugene, Oregon. He/him.
In 2010, he hosted the "American Indian Comedy Slam: Goin' Native, No Reservations Needed" on Showtime. With Hill emceeing the event, six Native American comedians performed in the show. It was the first all-Native American comedy show to air on television.

This is stand-up comic Charlie Hill, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Charlie Hill became the first Native American to perform stand-up comedy on national television when he performed on The Richard Pryor Show in 1977. 🧵

The inclusion of soccer in the foundation's programs may be a nod to his niece, Madison Hammond, who in 2020 became the first Native American to play for the National Women's Soccer League. She currently plays for Angel City FC and credits uncle Notah Begay III as one of her athletic inspirations.

This is Notah Begay III, professional golfer. Belonging to the Navajo, San Felipe Pueblo, and Isleta Pueblo peoples, Begay is one of the few Native Americans to golf in the PGA Tour. (His namesake grandfather was a codetalker in WWII).

This is Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr., member of the Ho-Chunk Nation & veteran of two branches of the U.S. military who died in combat in the Korean War. For his service, he was decorated with 13 medals (some posthumously), including the Medal of Honor & Purple Heart. 🧵

The Five Moons, individually and collectively, have a legacy of honors for inspiring people through their art. The Tulsa Historical Society has a set of five sculptures to honor the women, and a mural by Chickasaw artist Mike Larsen hangs in the Oklahoma State Capital rotunda dedicated to them.

Yvonne Chouteau, of the Shawnee Tribe, was the youngest dancer to be accepted into the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo at age 14. It would take only 4 more years for her fame in her roles to lead to her being inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, also as the youngest person to do so.

Larkin, however, may be best known as a dance director and an educator in the field. After the birth of her son, she retired from performance and co-founded the Tulsa Ballet and its associated school; the ballet company still operates today. She also taught at public schools and Tulsa University.

Moscelyne Larkin, of the Eastern Shawnee and Peoria nations, joined the Original Ballet Russe in 1941 at age 15, one of the youngest dancers to do so. She would later join the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, where she would have numerous lead roles, and was often featured at Radio City Music Hall.

Rosella Hightower, of the Choctaw Nation, had her breakout role as a last-minute replacement for the title role in "Giselle" in 1947. Followed by the lead role in "Swan Lake" a few days later, she was catapulted to stardom and joined the de Cuevas ballet dance troupe.

Marjorie Tallchief, younger sister of Maria by one year, was the first Native American to hold the title of "première danseuse étoile" (first star dancer) at the Paris Opera Ballet. Her roles included "Annabel Lee", "Romeo & Juliet", and "Giselle", and she often performed in front of dignitaries.

Maria Tallchief was also credited with popularizing "The Nutcracker" as a Christmas classic in her performance in George Balanchine's version of the ballet. She also had acclaimed roles in "Swan Lake", "Orpheus" and many more, and was acclaimed ballet artist Rudolf Nureyev's partner in his US debut.

Maria and Marjorie Tallchief of the Osage Nation studied ballet from an early age; their family were among the Osage who had significant oil wealth. Maria, who was born Betty Marie, changed her first name slightly to conform to the ballet company's wishes, while refusing to change her surname.

Incoming President Joe Biden nominated Deb Haaland for the position of Secretary of the Interior; on March 15, 2021, she was confirmed in a Senate vote of 51 to 40. Haaland was the first Native American to serve as a Department Secretary (and second Native cabinet member, after VP Charles Curtis).

This is Deb Haaland, American politician and member of the Laguna Pueblo. Elected the same time as Sharice Davids, Haaland was one of the first two Native American women to be seated in the U.S. Congress, as representative for New Mexico's 1st district.

Stephen Graham Jones has also turned his hand to writing comic books, as the writer on the series "Earthdivers" (published by IDW), about a group of time-traveling Native Americans seeking to right the wrongs of America by changing them at their root. (First volume: Kill Columbus.)

His newest novel is "The Buffalo Hunter Hunter", about a Blackfeet vampire taking revenge against perpetrators of genocide. It was released this March and is getting a lot of critical acclaim. Also this year he released a 2-in-1 omnibus of earlier novellas, "The Babysitter Lives/Killer on the Road".

At present, he has won 4 Bram Stoker Awards, 3 Shirley Jackson Awards, a Ray Bradbury Prize, a Locus, an Alex Award, the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award, and a British Fantasy Award. His most awarded work is "The Only Good Indians", which won 5 of these awards with 7 more nominations.

Most of these are from the week before; this hasn't really been a movie-watching week for me. Resident Evil is increasingly ridiculous but still kind of fun. Hellboy's aesthetic was great; a little polish on the plot could have elevated it significantly.

Besides leading to the famous "Basement Tapes" collaboration, this period was also formative for the group that would eventually be known simply as The Band; the same house where the "Basement Tapes" were recorded housed the songwriting for their debut album "Music From Big Pink".

This is Dave Anderson. He's famous. More precisely, he's the founder of the Famous Dave's barbecue restaurant chain. A citizen of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians and descendant of the Choctaw Nation, he launched the chain in 1994. 🧵
