I keep saying this whenever I (frequently) hear people say that they’re just holding out for 4 years from now. Feels very “we’ll just be at home for 2 weeks” in March 2020 to me.
I worry that not enough of a big deal is being made about how long-term the devastation of these budget cuts to our scientific and health agencies will be, beyond the absolute ruin they will cause in the acute period.

Someone asked me today how I stayed so up-to-date on the state of the NIH. The answer: Intermittent Freaking-Out protocol™️
hats off to my scientist friends who are getting promotion and recommendation letters out for our young and submitting reviews for manuscripts or grants on-time

(I am using the Intermittent Freaking-Out protocol™️: 1 hour of doing real work followed by 30 min of reading the news/doomscrolling)

The IDC rate cut will affect much more than me personally, but my partner and I wake up every morning waiting for this same email from our org.

Call your senators and let ppl know the importance of health research. The courts alone aren’t going to save us. We need widespread public outcry.
Mass General Brigham said it will let go of hundreds of employees in the next two months, the largest layoff in the organization’s history, as the health system grapples with financial shortfalls and operational challenges.

I’m going to spend all day in nature today and tomorrow doing a fun and new thing. Much needed break from this dystopian nightmare.

I hope this allows institutions to seek injunctive relief, but makes me very uneasy.
On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

NIH just cut indirect rates to max 15%, effective immediately. Catastrophic to research institutions and universities.
