Other non-fiction highlights: Kelly & Zach Weinersmith’s “A City on Mars" about the practical difficulties of setting up shop on the red planet, and Tolstoy’s “A Confession”

In non-fiction, George Saunders’s “A Swim in a Pond in the Rain” was a Russian Short Fiction class in book form.

Diane Vonglis Parnell’s “The Taste of Anger” is a memoir about a horrifying childhood that ends with the children leaving the frying pan for the fire. It left me hungry for a sequel.

Honorable mentions in fiction: E.M. Delafield’s “Diary of a Provincial Lady” (1930) was a hoot, and I liked Mark Twain’s “Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc” (1896) a lot more than I thought I would.

“The Green Knight” enthused me so much that I went on a Murdoch binge, reading seven more of her novels and a couple of her nonfiction books too. Others I really enjoyed were “The Black Prince”, “Sartre: Romantic Rationalist”, and “The Book and the Brotherhood”.

FWIW, my 2024 #books review:

My fiction faves: Julian Barnes’s “The Sense of an Ending” and Iris Murdoch’s “The Green Knight” & “The Good Apprentice”

In “Green Knight” there’s a chapter from the POV of a dog. A bad novelist might try that. A good one knows better. But Murdoch is a great novelist.
