It will always be impressive to me that one change of mechanics spawned this format.
Its proof that despite magic becoming more and more hostile towards players, we can still carve out a space for ourselves. That each and every one of Magic's 30k game pieces can be innovative. That there's a game designer within all of us. That corporate greed will consume us all (case and point).
