The ox and donkey are looking at the nativity scene in the Codex Egberti. The evangelistary was copied at the end of the 10th century for Archbishop Egbert of Trier (Wissenschaftliche Bibliothek Trier, HS Ms. 24, f. 13r).

In July 1951 she sent the postcard together with part of the estate to MGH president Baethgen, who was very grateful. In another letter Helene allowed the use for scholary purposes (MGH archive B 699). More: mgh.de/en/blog/post/treasures-mgh-no-17 #medivalsky #modernhistory

After WW 2 Helene got in touch with the MGH about her deceased father's estate. Her father was Harry Bresslau, a recognised historian and charter-specialist of his day, see: visit.mgh.de/en/jew-em/harry-bresslau #medivalsky #modernhistory

In 1921, Helene Bresslau had married the later Nobel laureate and physician Albert Schweitzer. Together they went to Gabon in 1913 and started a jungle hospital in Lambarene which became famous. #medivalsky #modernhistory

New episode “Treasures of the MGH Library and Archive”: On Sept 30, 1943, German soldiers set fire to the Villa Montesano in the hills behind Naples and they were destroying the only surviving original register of Emperor Frederick II (1192-1250).
