It’s clay reclaim day in my tiny apartment studio. First I’m drying out old blocks of clay on the front stoop, then hammering the dried clay into chunks to slag down in a bucket. Then the clay is dried on plaster bats. When it feels right, I wedge the slop back into clay and make something from it.

Here are my test tiles for a local Jersey wild clay that I mixed with porcelain. From left to right, we have cone 05 ox, cone 6 ox, cone 10 ox, cone 10 red, cone 10 red w/ clear glaze, and cone 10 “ fake woodfire” featuring a shino dipped in too much wood ash. I’m underwhelmed by it 😕

These pieces use the pyroplasticity of clay arrange the flowers in the kiln in a cosmic Ikebana way. All of the flowers enter the kiln pointing straight up and the heat causes them to droop and relax.

I am going to be firing Standard Clay’s 266 for the first time, and I’ve heard that lower fire dark brown clays like to bloat. Does anyone have any sage wisdom is regarding avoiding bloat?
