One thing that I liked about Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein (2025) has to do with the tiresome biographical interpretation that the novel often receives, by which the creature is inspired by Mary Shelley’s experience with abortion and death through labour, thus precluding the female author’s(1/2)

Re-reading Jane Eyre and came back here for your comments
Think I’m gonna do a casual read through of either Pride & Prejudice or Jane Eyre. I read both several times in undergrad and grad school, but which one do people prefer returning to after a long pause?

There is no such thing as “saving” money by cutting social programs. Need still exists, hunger still exists, illness still exists. Cuts merely push the remedies for these many forms of suffering into crueler social relations and more chaotic social outcomes.

It is violent. It’s violent to take uncompensated work from people, run it through a sausage grinder, and then expect to be paid for it.

But it also highlights what these thieving fucks can’t understand, which is that writing and knowledge is more than quickly getting words on the page.
If there's no attribution, how do I know it was my research? Because I'm the only person who has done that research! It was original thoughts that came from my brain and no one else put the sources together in that way.

I think that I'm... grieving? It feels violent somehow

“Decolonial” scholars who remain silent on the genocide in Gaza are the absolute worst. They’ve advanced their careers on something they consider a topic to be written in the past tense.

This was just posted by @tbretc.bsky.social on another platform. The Chicago Sun-Times obviously gets ChatGPT to write a ‘summer reads’ feature almost entirely made up of real authors but completely fake books. What are we coming to?
