This is why I’m so passionate about social constructions of morality and worthiness in the healthcare space which play such a huge role in priority setting. We are all responsible for changing this culture. And that means changing how we talk about this population.

What this tells me is that we can not successfully change these systems without also changing the culture of how we speak about and care for women and children.

Much of this is true for other patient populations but there is something unique happening here. Maternal and child medicines have historically been lower priority because they aren’t as profitable.

This means there a places where one may not be able to trust the quality of the medication prescribed, or physicians are unable to provide lifesaving care because they simply don’t have the medication available at the time it is needed.

Access to lifesaving medicines for this population remains highly variable due to weak proqurement systems, limited market incentives, and fragmented regulatory bodies.

This allows for a much more resilient healthcare system that can not only respond to health emergencies more quickly, but also project disease progression in ways that impact local health policy development and the procurement of necessary resources for disease prevention. Great day at #GHSCS!

The pelvis has been invisiblized in textbooks, curricula, & we don’t have a cultural vocabulary to talk about these things in a meaningful way. This leads to serious stigmatization both inside and outside clinical walls. Thank you Dr. Maria Uloko and all for continuing to make these things visible!

Since, she continued to develop debilitating pelvic and back pain resulting in an inability to work, sit, urinate, defecate, or have sex normally.
