I hesitate to comment since my painting skills are limited, but you could try dry brushing with eg. grey. That would probably knock out the shine.

As my Dad ages the decline in the story is all too real. I had never thought of it as mirroring the trajectory of life but perhaps I’m projecting.

Not sure I could cope with the novel of Flowers for Algernon. I read the short story when I was probably about 11 and it still makes me a bit quivery lipped 52 years later.
