It's only 8am, so this may not be the weirdest factoid I learn today, but it's a contender: Christian Bale's father married Gloria Steinem.

My previous whining about having "Pink Pony Club" stuck in my head? Now it is "Ye Canny Shove Yer Granny Off a Bus." Come back, Chappell Roan, all is forgiven.

Factcheck as if your life depended on it. Because it does.

Do I have any friends who are members? Not for long, I hope.
Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

Do any of y'all use Ground News? I'm tempted, because I feel compelled to see what Fox is saying about any particular thing, and then I need to take a shower, or at least plunge my head in a bucket of isopropyl alcohol.

A few days ago I asked about a “What’s Trump Done Today?” website. I feel stupid for asking now, because the perfect one — succinct and authoritative — is the White House. Problem solved.

Any ideas about what forms of feedback Congress is listening to now? I've called my (Republican) representative three times since the election, and they made it clear they weren't interested in hearing from voters -- even the time I claimed I was a Republican voter.

Today's photo I couldn't take: Four adults standing sheepishly in the parking lot by the sledding hill, their arms full of sleds and saucers and innertubes, while their small children expended all their energy climbing all over the mountain of filthy snow left by the plow.

Okay, we're four days in. Surely someone has created a "What's Trump Done Today?" website, with a bullet-point list of executive order and other codswallop, organized by date and with links to details? If not, why not?

I'm reposting this not because of the message about CO, but because the child's face is eerily like the face I've been looking at in the mirror since 1966 or so. My friends see me from all angles, but I only see this angle and expression, and IT'S WEIRDING ME OUT, MAN.
Carbon monoxide deaths spike in winter. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms. Make sure the vents for your home heating appliances are clear of ice and snow.

All that said, I’m not relinquishing the Bad Place yet. It still does what I want it to, with the help of FB Purity, which blocks everything except my actual friends.

And seriously, why ISN’T there a replacement yet? We’ve been dreaming of one since at least 2010. Diaspora never went anywhere.

Bluesky isn’t built to replace the sustained social engagement of the place everyone is fleeing. Maybe we can use it to build momentum for replace, though?

Do other rural villages have cemetery raffles (prize: one plot), or just mine?

My feeds are full of that anti-AI rant that insists that thinking cannot be disentangled from writing. I'm sure Socrates, Kongzi, and Muhammed would feel very deflated to learn that.

I haven’t fact-checked this, but if true…. [via @ennui.org]
There are currently only 22 films streaming on Netflix made before 1980 and not a single one made before 1960, with the oldest film on the platform currently being PSYCHO. I know I’m a broken record but: buy physical media, support your local library, etc etc

I canNOT get "Pink Pony Club" out of my head -- it's been on repeat for several days now -- but no matter how bad things get in the US, I am not quitting my job to go dance down in West Hollywood.

That said, I do thank my wicked dreams of leaving Tennessee.

Today in cow-gazing:
A Holstein calf standing on top of a large hay bale, while all the other calves and heifers stared at her. It was a veritable caption contest, I tell you.

Fact-check the stuff you agree with/ want to believe, not just the other stuff. I've had three reminders of this in the last two days. I have to admit that I resent the added burden, but I'd feel worse if I allowed myself to be duped.

Trying to generate more content here, although I've been consuming for at least a year. I only post to entertain, for the most part; I don't look to social media for self-expression, and while I may be a rhetorician, I can't persuade anyone to change their politics. Phatic utterances it is.

O for the days of Usenet (pre-eternal September, of course). Fezbuch is eeeeeevil, and this format prioritizes quips rather than conversations.
