Lehman/CUNY English prof, journalist, author: books on women’s history, tattoo history, pageantry. Now writing Brazen Infidels: Radical Quaker Women and the Fight for Civil Rights (Beacon Press, 2028) NBCC member
People are often stunned to learn I was raised Quaker and was married in a Quaker meetinghouse. My next book gives me an opportunity to
convey what Quaker history is all about: radical reform, civil disobedience, and from day one (in 1652), the importance of women’s voices. #quakers

Mike Lawler’s Town Hall in Rockland County got off to a great start tonight: booed before he even hit the stage, then pelted by questions (picked lottery style) from (all but one) furious dems. I highly recommend attending the one in Westchester next month. You’ll feel a little less hopeless. #NY17

Super peaceful NYC rally #indivisible

For colleagues who missed the (mind-blowing) ICE raids briefing at yesterday’s general faculty meeting—and any CUNY profs/students. I have (sloppy) notes if anyone wants them; video was prohibited.

Update: 12:30-12:45 today)The rally will address the administration's proposal to abolish the DOE and cut funding for public schools. We will have some signs for people but also encourage people to bring their own homemade signs and ask that they focus on these attempts to cut education.

One of my favorite artist’s books (and not just bc Olive Oatman's in it): Allison Pebworth's "Beautiful Possibility" (intro by Rebecca Solnit). I’d love to own all these paintings addressing America's "curse and its dreams." Next best thing: Pebworth has a show opening at Mass Moca on Feb. 22.

In what national pageant did contestants recite statistics about violence against women in their country instead of sharing their measurements?
Find out on 1/20 at 1:30 (Eastern US) or 6:30 (UK), in my Zoom lecture "Beauty Pageants and National Identity," courtesy the Feminist Lecture Program.
