National Literacy Institute: 21% of adults in the US were illiterate as of 2024. 54% of US adults have a literacy below a 6th-grade level (20% are below 5th-grade level). Worldwide the US ranks 36th in literacy. This is horrifying. It also explains a lot.

Turkey update: He is still there. I have gone in and out the door several times, said hi to him in passing, and he is completely chill about the whole thing. My son has started using him as a weather gauge: "Judging from the turkey's feathers it must be windy out there!"
