These days I'm buying books from Kobo. I can still, after jumping through some hoops, add them to my Amazon library. (More importantly, I can make a local backup so that I never lose access to them.) I sometimes wonder if anyone at Amazon notices me adding books I didn't buy from them. Probably not?
