Private philanthropy is not going to fix the gaping holes left by federal cuts.

Letters/applications are up:

4x for Spencer Foundation (500 -> 2000)

3x for W. T. Grant Foundation

It's "millions compared to billions," said Alonzo L. Plough, VP of research at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
A thoughtful analysis from @mkhaw.bsky.social of the limitations of philanthrophy in filling the holes left by NIH and NSF cuts. “We’re trying to just get as much money out the door as we can," the Spencer Foundation's president said. #HigherEd #AcademicSky

Are you a researcher who recently had a grant terminated through NSF, NIH or another federal agency, or who is worried about obtaining federal funding in the future? Are you turning to foundational grants instead? I'd like to talk to you for a @chronicle.com story. Reach me maddie.khaw@chronicle.com

This is a really thoughtful piece on the substantial budget challenges facing Sonoma State University. Quite a few regional public and private universities are having similar--and difficult--conversations as enrollment has fallen over the last decade.

In this case, at Sonoma State University, @mkhaw.bsky.social reported tirelessly to understand not only what's behind budget cuts, but also what the cuts mean. The reality is, cutting is a gamble. The budget needs to be balanced, but no one's totally sure this particular plan is going to work.
