Ensuring the best available science informs policymaking for environmental sustainability for a better world leaving no one behind. At UNEP tackling the triple planetary crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss, and waste and pollution. Together!

Slow climate adaptation is threatening lives and economies.

We need a global adaptation finance push.

Even amid competing priorities the reality is simple: if we do not invest now, we will face escalating costs every year.

The world has a new science-policy panel on chemicals, waste and pollution.

This result is thanks to so many, including our two Intergovernmental Meeting Co-Chairs, 🇺🇾 Ambassador Laura Dupuy Lasserre and 🇯🇵 Vice-Minister Yutaka Matsuzawa.

Very grateful to them both for their leadership and support.

Big step to #BeatPollution!

Countries have just agreed to establish a new global science-policy panel to support the management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution.

The panel will equip countries with the science needed #ForPeopleForPlanet: bit.ly/45z01DE

Countries from the Alliance of Small Island States are making their voices heard at #INC5.

As plastic pollution washes up on their shores and is found in the fish they catch, they are calling for an ambitious #PlasticsTreaty.

Delighted to meet 🇫🇯 🇼🇸 🇻🇺 🇦🇬 🇹🇻 delegations and hear their priorities.

We must end plastic pollution. At #INC5 we have reached the moment of truth for a #PlasticsTreaty.

People are demanding this deal.

Including Myles Kariuki from 🇰🇪 who wrote to me and INC Chair Luis Vayas to say 'please help us'.

We cannot let Myles or others down: www.unep.org/news-and-sto...

If we don’t deliver #ClimateAction now, the future is already written.

The data is clear. The science is clear.

And we cannot negotiate with either.

Today at #COP29, @unep.bsky.social presented the latest data from our #EmissionsGap & #AdaptationGap reports.

As UNEP's #EmissionsGap Report shows, current commitments put the world on course for temperature rise of 2.6-2.8°C this century.

To keep 1.5°C alive, nations must collectively commit to cut 42% of annual GHG emissions by 2030 in upcoming NCDs 3.0

But the #AdaptationGap continues to grow.

While @unep.bsky.social data shows adaptation finance to developing countries increased from $22 billion to $28 billion in 2022 - much more is needed to close the gap, including capacity-building & technology transfer support

To implement a #PlasticsTreaty we will need finance from all sources - public, private and blended finance - to help lower costs, adopt innovative solutions and support small businesses in developing countries.

At #COP29, UNEP, IFC and UNCDF discussed how we will work to deliver this.
