This Joyce Wieland quilt (now showing at the AGO) seems as relevant as ever.

The Bluewater Bridge, which I won’t be crossing anytime soon, if ever again.

While researching my book about forced labour I took a detour down this road after seeing the work of artist Ewald Matare in Fulda, where my husband’s mother was held. So many artists were persecuted, some never to recover. Here is one of his postwar pieces in Fulda, deeply moving.

A timeline cleanser - the field behind my house looking east as the sun sets behind me.

On #WorldWaterDay, I’m sharing my love of the Great Lakes with these photos of Lakes Huron, Ontario, and Superior. Water is life, and the lakes are protected by treaties and agreements that are now in danger of being gutted. This precious resource must be preserved.

On #WorldPoetryDay I’m thinking back to a trip to Chicago, when the words of poets were written on banners in the streets. More poetry, please.

This has been a shit day. Here’s a photo of sunset over the French River to take some of the sting of our outrage away. May Ukraine prevail, and the US return to its senses.

“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” George Orwell

Archivists preserve the evidence of the past so that historians can reconstruct and analyze important events and social structures in history. They are critical to a functioning democracy.

These people can’t get their stories straight. So sick of their juvenile posturing.

Some Lake Huron content. We’ve been under a polar vortex and it’s been snowing almost continuously since the new year. I got out today to look at the lake, which is finally freezing. I like the high contrast with the dark grey sky. Oh, and there’s a ghostly freighter in the distance.

Time for some Great Lakes content. Here’s a Huron sunset from last evening, a rare sun sighting from the snowy west coast of Ontario.

Toronto friends, I’ll be chatting about Wanda’s War with historian Christopher Moore this Friday, November 29, at Cameron Hall. It would be great to see some familiar faces! If you can’t make it, there’s a webcast option that day or anytime after.

We have unemployment insurance for job loss. Maybe we need wage insurance for deadbeat employers - but funded by employers not workers. What good does it do to have govt workers chase bankrupt companies?

November. Grey sky, bare trees, roaring lake. It never messes around.
