Ferrycarrig Castle or Roches Tower commands the entrance to Wexford Harbor at the Slaney River, County #Wexford, #Ireland. Built around 1500, still looking great at its half millennium.

Ferrycarrig Castle, as this fortification is known today, is a 'tower-house a type of fortified dwelling that was extremely common here in Ireland between the 15th and 17th centuries. Like Barntown Castle (Tower House), Ferrycarrig was also built by the Roche family. It was first mentioned in 1555, as in the ownership of Alexander Roche of Ardtramon and later accounts indicate that Walter Roche of Newcastle controlled it in 1641. Throughout the centuries, this tower house provided much-needed protection to the trade and traffic that was flowing between Enniscorthy and Wexford Town. This tower house is located alongside the dock at which the "ferry to Carrig" used to be tied up. This is where the name "Ferrycarrig" originated. The tower is situated on a rock outcrop and commands the narrow passage of the River Slaney as it enters the inner Wexford harbour. The rectangular tower house (ext, dims. 7.3m x 6m) survives to four storeys. The rebuilt doorway is protected inside with an original 'murder-hole', that allowed the defenders above to attack or stab at anyone who had made it through the door. The entrance leads directly to a 'mural stairs', which is a term a staircase that is accommodated inside a wall structure. This mural stairs leads to the first floor under a stone vaulted ceiling. The second floor has a fireplace and simple rectangular windows. A 'garderobe' slightly overhangs the inner face of the wall and a spy-hole is broken through from the chute to view the second floor chamber. A 'garderobe' was somewhere to keep your clothes (same word as 'wardrobe), it is also a common term for the castle toilet. At the northwest angle the stairs rise anti-clockwise to the third floor, from here the castle structure terminates; however, it is believed that the castle had a further two floors before being capped with a pitched roof and battlements.
