Let’s talk about weather balloons—a.k.a. radiosondes—and why recent cuts to NWS staffing and balloon launch schedules are putting the public at risk (eg., Deaths in Texas). No satellite or model can replace what these humble balloons do. Here's why. 🧵

For more than a decade, there has been a systematic effort to destroy the NLRB by starving it of staff and resources. Sensing blood in the water, those who wish to do wrong with impunity are now sounding the death knell and petitioning the courts to declare the Agency unconstitutional. 5-alarm fire.
Hello! I took a deep look at the efforts by SpaceX and Amazon to gut the NLRB, how SCOTUS' right-wing majority could kneecap the agency, and what the disastrous results could be for workers and unions.

In politics clarity is its own opportunity. The storm of the 2024 election has created great clarity. The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, and 3rd richest man in the world, Jeff Bezos, are currently asking a group of Trump judges to end the right to organize & join a union in the United States.

NLRBU Executive VP, Michael Bilik, was quoted yesterday in the Guardian:

“We’re in a very precarious position right now. Our backlog is skyrocketing, and we urgently need funding and personnel – not punitive restrictions on our basic ability to operate.”

If you are writing about strikes or college employee-athletes today and not talking about how the agency with exclusive authority to prosecute unfair labor practices is on track to be kneecapped in 72 hours by a negligent Congress, you are missing the point.

Fund the NLRB.

Can anyone explain why DOJ refused to prosecute Meadows for contempt? DOJ has completely dropped the ball in its failure to investigate seditious conspiracy inside the West Wing. Can’t really blame J6 Committee for not exactly rushing to cooperate with DOJ’s one-sided demands.

If now isn't the time for a nationwide teacher/bus driver/school staff strike, I don't know when is. Put the Senate on the clock to come up with something before next school year. Labor Day march on Washington.

Awful news and so sad to hear about Rich Trumpka’s sudden passing. He was a dear friend of my late father and our family. In the face of exploding inequity and wealth consolidation, he was a tireless advocate for the working class. Always decent and kind. Rest in power Rich.

Long but worthwhile read on much longer COVID. Now in my 11th month of post-COVID syndrome, it can be both debilitating and easily dismissed, a cruel combination. I’m one of the luckier ones and have found rehab, but countless others will need support.

At last, the poison that is Peter Robb has been drawn from the NLRB. The last 4 years have stressed many our institutions, and the NLRB is no exception. 20% fewer staff. 27% drop in enforcement. Staff unions nearly shattered. This is Robb’s legacy. May he never return.
