I could not endorse this more. What was the worst about family detention was the gaslighting that it was actually humane. “Look at the cartoon paintings on the wall! We have crayons!” Kind emblematic of Democratic immigration policies. Crayons and cruelty.
I always worry about saying things like this publicly because of course what Trump is promising to do this time is uniquely horrible and terrifying. But do you know what prepared me for being an immigration reporter under the first Trump admin? Being an immigration reporter under Obama.

Btw, I completely support the government paying for gender affirming surgeries of people held in federal custody. If the government doesn’t want to pay, they can simply release them.
