The system pre-dated contact but was likely written on materials that did not preserve well like bark. When the French showed up in the region they appropriated it to spread Catholicism. Because of copying and religious interests those are all that survived to the modern day.

Yeah it's pretty cool, and no I'm not an expert in this but it's certainly my interest. Michelle Sylliboy (who is Mi'kmaw herself) is an artist who has written a lot on this subject. I would say she is certainly an expert on this if you are looking for one.
