I actually listened to Silver Nitrate because it was the same narrator who did @jeremycshipp.bsky.social's The Merry Dredgers, and I wanted to hear more of her.

Silver Nitrate is one of my favorite genres, the Cursed Film. And if you like stories of cursed films (or other media) I'm compiling a list (in my head). If a story features a movie that can kill you, I'm there.

Or Doctor Moreau's House of Pain Noir, apparently a 2025 desaturated version of Charles Band's 2004 direct-to-video adaptation.
Have you seen any of those? I haven't. Maybe they're all excellent, but I'm guessing not.
My point is, this story has been filmed. Maybe it's been filmed enough.

Or two different German TV adaptations that appear to be episodes of anthology series, one in 1977 and one in 2018. Or The Planet of Doctor Moreau, an episode of the 1998 animated Silver Surfer series.

Neither is that counting The Island of Doctor Moron (a musical spoof based on a stage musical), several shorts, a 97 minute documentary about the 1996 movie, or a 45 minute TV special about the documentary.

Looking on IMDB, I find at least four previous feature film adaptations and a TV movie. This is not counting a movie, a TV movie, and a mini-series in development. That also isn't counting The Daughter of Doctor Moreau and Return to the Island of Doctor Moreau (both in development).

Seriously though, I recommend Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Daughter of Doctor Moreau (and Silver Nitrate). It helps to be familiar with the Wells book (which is rather short and a classic if not a masterpiece) but reading the Wikipedia page is probably enough.

All that said, Sweet Tooth is about human-animal hybrids and they did a pretty good job designing those. I'll probably watch Daughter at some point but without some really good reviews (from people I trust) I likely won't watch the Island movies.

Wells's book is pretty good. I hesitate to say Moreno-Garcia's novel is better (because would not exist without Wells) but...it's better. (See that hesitation?)
Even Wells called his Moreau "an exercise in youthful blasphemy."

And they will probably be CGI, which means actors will be acting to actors in motion-capture suits, assuming they're actually in the greenscreen room at the same time.
And however good it looks when the movie comes out, it will probably look like crap in 5-10 years.

I really like Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Daughter of Doctor Moreau (and Silver Nitrate, her other novel that I've read). But Dr. Moreau's animal-human hybrids are, to my mind, something that should remain in the realm of words. Any onscreen treatment will fail compared with mental imagery.
