Some asshole.
Cranking the pretenti-o-meter to 11 in this. I feel like I need to go to church after reading this thing.

Very good post from @faceyouhate.bsky.social today, it is free so there is no excuse to not check it out. My favorite part was this:

I would go with Point Blank, since one way to interpret that movie is with Hunter as a ghost trying to move on.

Book No. 13 - We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. I am two for two with ghost novellas this year, the prior being The Turn of the Screw. Jackson mistressfully creates empathy for her main character while not absolving her wrongdoings.

Book No. 12 Beowulf - translated by J.R.R. Tolkien. I don't think I would have enjoyed this as much if I had not read the Poetic Edda and the Saga of the Volsungs beforehand. Because I did the whole thing made so much more sense to me. I got excited when Wayland Smith did a walk-on cameo of sorts

Book No. 11: Life For Sale by Yukio Mishima. I enjoyed it a lot, the black humor and satire had me smiling throughout. A much easier read than Ulysses which I’m still going through which is a nice counterpoint when I need a pallet cleanser.

If you read this post, not only will you be intellectually stimulated, you can find a an Anthony Burgess reference that reminded me of this letter Hunter S. Thompson sent him:

“He saved my life, you know. Thirty years ago. I was knifed at a bazaar in Calcutta, and he carried me to the hospital on his back.”

“Who stabbed you?”

“He did. There was a price on my head, and he was a hired assassin. Stuck me in the gut with a shiv”

Book No. 10 is Somebody Owes me Money by Donald Westlake. Very enjoyable, felt like a less dark Richard Stark novel which makes sense. Thank you for reading my grandiose insights.

Book No. 8 is Turn of the Screw by Henry James. The sort of spooky, psychological, terror story that I enjoy. This book has some more of his works but I just read the one for now.

Book No. 4 and Book No. 5 of 2025. Not much to say about these but something funny in Saga of the Voldungs: Most users have English rendered cognomens like Sigurð Snake-Eye, or Ivar the Boneless, but He’s Ragnar Lothbrook because Ragnar Shaggy-pants sounds silly.
